Ignition Interlock Device (IID) Installation
If you are required to install an IID, you must have the device installed by an authorized professional. However, as the installation is a relatively simple one, the device can be installed while you wait. Further, you must have an IID in each vehicle you drive. However, motorcycles and vehicles owned by an employer are exempt from this stipulation.
Proof of IID installations must be given to the court, which diligently monitors those individuals required to install IIDs. After the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is notified about the IID installation requirement in your vehicle, the DMV will place a notification on your driver's license. Additionally, if you do not install the IID as required, the court will let the DMV know, and the DMV will suspend all of your driving privileges until you install the court-ordered IID.
Ignition Interlock Device (IID) Maintenance
Once you install the IID, you must show the court that your IID is being properly maintained. For instance, an authorized professional must inspect and calibrate the IID at intervals that are not to exceed two months. If during one of these inspections it is suspected that you have been tampering with your IID, this discovery will be reported either to the DMV or to the court. In turn, this behavior can result in you having your driving privileges completely revoked or temporarily suspended.
