Is it Illegal to Drive After Getting a DUI in California?

Actor Ryan Rottman was pulled over by police on July 8^th after an officer witnessed him jumping a curb with his vehicle. When the cops approached the vehicle, they realized that he reeked of alcohol. He was then given a field sobriety test, which he failed, as well as a Breathalyzer test, on which he blew a 0.19 - more than twice the legal limit in California.

So why was the 27-year-old Nickelodeon star then spotted driving in Los Angeles on Thursday, August 4^th? Isn't it illegal to drive after getting a DUI in California?

TSA Officer Allegedly Stole $22,000 in Watches from LA Airport Luggage

A Transportation Security Administration (TSA) worker allegedly stole $22,000 in watches from travellers' baggage at the Los Angeles International Airport. After a police investigation, 38-year-old Paul Yashou was arrested at his Torrance home. He recently was indicted on three misdemeanor theft counts and two felony theft counts on July 22, 2011.

Specifically, Yashou allegedly took a $15,000 IWC GST chrono perpetual calendar moon phase watch, a $5000 Breitling Crosswind watch, a $1000 Antima watch, a $1000 Movado watch, and a $1000 pre-paid debit card. He has been accused of taking these items while the items went through security at Terminal One at the Los Angeles International Airport.

For each felony charge, Yashou could potentially face a maximum of ten years, whereas the misdemeanor charges could carry a maximum of one year in jail. In 2008, over 16,400 claims were filed with the TSA. In 2010, these cases dropped to less than 12,275. Paris Hilton's Stalker Arrested outside Her Malibu, California Home

On July 4, 2011, a 36-year-old male was arrested just outside of Paris Hilton's home in Malibu, California. The alleged perpetrator, James Brian Rainford, was charged with three misdemeanor counts of court order disobedience and two felony stalking counts. Later, he was jailed with a set bail of $150,000.

According to police reports, paparazzi were the ones to notice Rainford near Hilton's Malibu property. This is Rainford's third arrest in the span of less than a year for incidents involving Hilton. In October of 2010, Rainford was arrested outside of Paris Hilton's Hollywood Hills home. Because of this incident, he was issued a restraining order. He later was arrested for attempting to grab Cy Waits, Hilton's boyfriend at the time, near an LA courthouse.

Just how often does stalking occur?

According to a 2009 Bureau of Justice Statistics report - via the National Crime Victimization Survey - almost 3.4 million adults in the United States were victims of a stalking crime over a twelve-month period in 2006. The survey further revealed that:

Most victims are under the age of thirty-five and are mostly women.
Almost three-quarters of the victims personally knew their stalkers.

Rodney King Arrested for DUI in Riverside County, California

Rodney King was arrested in Riverside County for allegedly driving under the influence (DUI) on Tuesday, July 12, 2011. He was taken to the Robert Presley Detention Center. Later, he was released on a $2,500 bail.

King is perhaps best known for being videotaped while being beaten by four police officers after a police chase in 1992 - and for being a catalyst for the Los Angeles riots that occurred in the early 1990s. Unfortunately, King suffered brain damage due to the police beating, but later he did successfully sue the city of Los Angeles for $3.8 million.

King also appeared on VH1's Celebrity Rehab recently, during which time he attempted to deal with his alcoholism. He has previously been charged with DUI and other offenses.

In general, if a person has multiple DUI convictions, he or she is considered to be a multiple DUI offender in California. As such, each additional DUI charge can result in tougher legal consequences for the defendant.

Paris Hilton's Brother Must Pay $4.6 Million for Los Angeles DUI Crash

According to a court ruling, Barron Hilton, brother of Paris Hilton, must pay plaintiff Fernando Telez $4.6 million in compensatory damages. In March of 2008, Barron Hilton was driving under the influence of alcohol when he hit and injured Telez. Hilton was underage at the time.

Hilton was charged with driving with a blood alcohol level above 0.08%. However, the police reports stated that he had a BAC of 0.14%.

What are California's underage DUI laws?

As there is a "Zero Tolerance Law," if a person under the age of 21 is discovered to have a BAC of 0.01% or greater, he or she will automatically be charged with a DUI offense. Reaching a BAC of 0.01% - for most individuals - involves consuming a four ounce glass of wine, a twelve ounce beer, or 1.25 ounces of liquor.

Police Arrest Two Teenagers for Home Burglary in Torrance, California

On the morning of Tuesday, May 31, 2011, two teenagers were arrested for allegedly breaking into a home in the north Torrance area. When a resident on 173^rd Street noticed two male figures climbing over a fence and entering a neighbor's house, she notified the police.

According to Torrance police officer Lieutenant Devin Chase, when the police arrived at the scene of the crime, both of the teenagers immediately ran out of the house. One teenager was apprehended right away, while a search - involving police dogs and a police helicopter - began for the other teenager.

While this search was going on, area residents were asked to remain inside their locked homes. A few hours later, the second teenager was discovered by a police dog in the 4100 block of 173^rd Street.

"Desperate Housewives" Star Arrested on Suspicion of DUI in LA

In the early morning hours of May 3, 2011, "Desperate Housewives" actor Ricardo Chavira was arrested with a DUI charge near Universal Studios, where his LA-based television show is filmed. Chavira plays Carlos Silos, Eva Longoria's onscreen husband, in the popular television drama. According to police reports and Torrance criminal defense lawyers, Chavira cut off an officer in a police car and then did not stop his car right away. Chavira was allegedly driving around sixty mph in a thirty-five mph zone.

A police officer pulled Chavira over and reportedly could smell alcohol on him. As such, field sobriety tests were administered. Chavira failed these tests. He would not submit to a blood and alcohol test, so he was arrested and taken to jail. He was held on a $25,000 bail.

Voluntary Field Tests

With respect to this particular case, participating in the field sobriety test is strictly voluntary. You do not legally have to participate in field sobriety tests. However, by participating in these types of tests, you can build a case for your arrest if you happen to fail a field sobriety test.

Consequences of a DUI Refusal

If you refuse to undergo further testing as Chavira did, you could face further legal consequences. Rick Springfield Arrested for DUI in Malibu, California

Singer Rick Springfield, best known for the 1981 hit song "Jessie's Girl," was arrested on suspicion of DUI on the evening of May 1, 2011 in Malibu, California. Steve Whitmore, a spokesperson for the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, stated that Springfield allegedly made a "maneuver away from the light" that caused a police officer to pull him over. Springfield was driving a vintage 1963 Corvette.

When administered a field sobriety test, the 61-year-old entertainer allegedly blew 0.10 percent, according to Whitmore. Springfield was then arrested and taken to the Malibu/Lost Hills Police Station. Coincidentally, this is the exact same police station that actor Mel Gibson was taken to when he was arrested for an alleged DUI charge. After spending several hours at the station, Springfield allegedly sobered up and was released from the facility on a $5,000 bond.

Former California-Based Olympic Gold Medalist Charged with DUI

A former California-based Olympic gold medalist and Gilroy high school track and field head coach, Alvin Harrison, was charged with felony DUI.

The murder itself occurred in Los Angeles, California on March 9, 1997, and the FBI joined this investigation five years after the actual murder occurred. As of April 12, 2011, the case remains unsolved, despite the fact that there were dozens of witnesses when Wallace was shot as he left an LA music industry party.

LA Times Online reported a former Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy is being charged with breaking into the home of his ex-fiance and pointing a gun at her boyfriend. According to Deputy District Attorney Alfred Coletta, police arrested Reymundo Lainez, 42, incident last April while he was still a sheriff's deputy. Lainez was being held on $50,000 bail. He is charged with felony first-degree burglary with a person present, felony assault with a firearm, making a criminal threat and a misdemeanor count of battery.

According to prosecutors, Lainez broke into his former fiance's Pasadena residence while he was off-duty. He is alleged to have pointed a gun at her boyfriend. He also allegedly threatened the man and punched him. The former deputy faces up to 16 years in state prison if he is convicted.

Man Wrongfully Detained in Glendale Murder Case Earns $1.31 Million Settlement

A California man wrongfully detained in connection with a Glendale shooting, Edmond Ovasapyan, was awarded a final settlement from the city this week.

Ovasapyan was originally detained in 2005 after the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Christopher Shahnazri in Glendale. Ovasapyan was kept in county jail for eight months after the district attorney's office filed murder charges against him.

However, while waiting on a preliminary hearing, Ovasapyan was exonerated on charges, as DNA evidence pointed to a different suspect. He was released soon after.

In February of last year, a jury found that Ovasapyan had been held in jail wrongfully, and awarded him $1.31 million in compensation, in addition to the legal fees he had incurred. The case was appealed to the federal 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in December, but upheld.

"We would have obviously wanted a different outcome," City Attorney Scott Howard said to the media. "The matter is now concluded and everyone hopes we can move on."

About the case, Howard said that "perhaps emotion got in the way. But from day one, we always felt the officers did the best they could to try to exonerate this guy.” The settlement will be paid from the city's liability insurance fund.

Refusing a Blood Alcohol Test after Being Arrested for DUI in California

Baltimore Orioles PItcher Alfredo Simon Main Suspect in a Fatal Shooting

The AP reports that police say Baltimore Orioles reliever Alfredo Simon is the primary suspect in a fatal shooting on New Year's Eve in the Dominican Republic. The pitcher is suspected of killing 25-year-old Michel Castillo Almonte and wounding his 17-year-old brother during a celebration in the northeast coastal town of Luperon, police said in a statement. No motive was revealed. Simon is from the Dominican Republic. Police said he fled after the incident.

Mel Gibson could be charged under California Penal Code section 273.5, California's "Domestic Violence statute." The charge stems from a suspicion that he physically abused ex-wife Oksana Gregorieva. The alleged incident being investigated occurred in January at Gibson's home in Malibu. Audio footage was released in 2010 revealing several heated phone conversations between Gibson and Gregorieva.

Section 273.5 says that "any person who willfully inflicts upon a person who is his...spouse, former spouse, cohabitant, or the mother...of his child, corporal injury resulting in a traumatic condition, is guilty of a felony, and upon conviction thereof shall be

Santa Ana Fatal Drunk Driving Car Crash

According to CBS, police arrested a 27-year-old man from Santa Ana on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 on suspicion of drunk driving and trying to leave the scene of a fatal crash.

Irvine Police Lt. Barry Aninag said that police booked Tapu Aniceto Sitagata on suspicion of felony DUI and hit-and-run.

According to Lt. Aninag, Sitagata crashed an SUV into a traffic signal pole while he he drove south on Culver Drive at approximately 3 a.m. Although Sitagata fled, he was caught about a half a block away from the scene of the fatal crash, he said.

The fatality was a rear-seat passenger his late teens or early 20s. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Aninag said. His name was not being disclosed. Authorities will have to confirm his identity and contact his family.

Lindsay Lohan Suspected of Attacking Betty Ford Clinic Staffer

Actress Lindsay Lohan, who is currently on probation for a DUI conviction, is being investigated for battery. The investigation stems from an allegation that she attacked a female staffer on December 12, 2010 at the Betty Ford Center, where Lohan had been ordered (by a Beverly Hills judge) to stay for violating her probation.

Identity Theft in Los Angeles: What IRS Has Planned

As identity theft continues to be rampant across the nation, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is doing its part in cracking down on these crimes.

According to The Wall Street Journal, during the last weekend of January, 58 people were arrested for alleged identity theft. The IRS and the Department of Justice assisted the federal government in catching these supposed criminals.

The 58 individuals are looking at 939 criminal charges that span 23 states. They have been suspected of using false Social Security numbers or other personal information to file false tax returns. In addition to the arrests, there were also “19 search warrants, 69 indictments, 10 guilty pleas and four sentencings and other actions,” reported The Wall Street Journal.

According to IRS Deputy Commissioner for Services and Enforcement Steven Miller, the IRS has increased its efforts to stop identity theft. New programs have been developed to help detect possible fraudulent tax returns.

Miller stated that in 2011 alone, the IRS was able to stop 260,000 identity thefts from receiving over a billion dollars in refunds.

Former Home Improvement Actor Arrested for Alleged DUI

You may remember him from Home Improvement as the cute kid who played the character, Mark Taylor. Taran Noah Smith is in the spotlight once again, but for a very different reason.

Twenty-seven-year-old Smith was arrested on February 1, 2012 for alleged driving under the influence (DUI) and possessing concentrated cannabis. He could be looking at up to a year and half in jail, plus a $1,500 fine.

Apparently, Smith was parked in his car in front of a fire hydrant. When police reached his vehicle, they supposedly could smell marijuana. It was reported by police that Smith failed a field sobriety test. He was arrested on DUI charges and is supposed to appear in court on March 1, 2012.

Smith has managed to stay out of the public’s eye, after finishing his stint as Tim Allen’s youngest son on Home Improvement. He chose to walk away from acting and establish a vegan food company.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Official Arrested for DUI

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s official found herself on the wrong end of the law this time. According to the Los Angeles Times, Natalie Salazar, a civilian director for the L.A. sheriff, was arrested for alleged drunk driving. Apparently, she had parked on the Foothill Freeway.

Based on reports, Salazar was passed out in her vehicle, which was stopped in the middle of the road. Police had fielded numerous calls about a car in the middle lane of the Pasadena freeway, which turned out to be Salazar’s. When law enforcement arrived on the scene, they found Salazar with her head on the steering wheel and foot on the brake pedal. The car was in drive.

California Highway Patrol Officer Ming Hsu said that Salazar’s blood alcohol level was .20 percent two hours after she was arrested. That is twice the legal limit in California.

Unfortunately, this was not Salazar’s first issue with the law. She was convicted in 2009 of driving under the influence. At that time, she was put on probation.

Salazar is in charge of the L.A. sheriff’s Community/Law Enforcement Partnership Program. Since this last run-in with police, she has been placed on leave.

LAPD Detective Faces Trial for Alleged Murder

It has been nearly a quarter of a century, but the case is just now in the news. The case involves alleged jealousy, betrayal, murder and a Los Angeles police detective.

Stephanie Lazarus, who was with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) for two decades, has been in jail for close to 2.5 years. She has been waiting for her trial and chose to remain in custody in lieu of $10 million bail. Lazarus has been accused of murdering Sherri Rasmussen in 1986, but has pled innocent.

According to prosecutors, a bite mark, a bullet, and gun barrel are among the evidence that show Lazarus was responsible for Rasmussen’s death. It is alleged that Lazarus had been romantically involved with Rasmussen’s husband, John Ruetten.

Rasmussen’s body was found on the floor of the home she shared with Ruetten in Van Nuys. Based on reports, she was shot three times in the chest. However, that wasn’t the only thing police found. Apparently, Rasmussen also had a bite mark on her arm. That bite mark and broken fingernails found at the crime scene are what eventually led investigators to Lazarus.

Back in 1986, the bite mark was swabbed with cotton to gather saliva. Yet, there wasn’t enough to go off of to link the saliva sample with the killer back then.

Lazarus’ lawyer is questioning the DNA evidence, specifically regarding how it was stored and handled over the last 26 years.

The case has gained national attention, due to the CSI-like investigation that led police to suspect Lazarus.

DUI Checkpoints Used in Hollywood to Nab Drunk Drivers

If you drove in the Wilshire area of Hollywood last weekend, you might have noticed that the police were in full force to track down drunk drivers. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) reported that it would set up two DUI and driver’s license checkpoints. But that wasn’t all they had planned. Many police officers were patrolling the region.

One such checkpoint started on Friday, January 20, 2012, at 8:00 PM and ended at 2:00 AM on Saturday, January 21, 2012. It was situated at Hollywood Boulevard and Bronson Avenue.

The second checkpoint was in the Wilshire Area, which began on Saturday, January 21, 2012, at 5:00 PM and shut down on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at 1:00 AM.

Video of Drunk Mel Gibson a Hot Debate in Lawsuit

It may have been nearly five years ago, but very few people have forgotten the alleged rants of Mel Gibson when he was arrested in Los Angeles County. According to reports, Gibson made many anti-Semitic comments after being arrested for driving under the influence (DUI). The police officer, who arrested Gibson, is now suing his department.

James Mee, a Los Angeles Sheriff’s Deputy, says that he is the victim of religious discrimination. Based on Mee’s claims, his superiors have allegedly targeted him because he is Jewish.

The video of Gibson has become a topic of debate in connection with the lawsuit. Mee wants the jurors to be able to watch the video, but the defendant is trying to block it. The defense’s argument is that the video has no bearing on Mee’s accusation and would be an embarrassment for the actor. They have also argued that since Gibson is a celebrity, it would only upset the jury to watch him in his drunken state.

As of the writing of this article, the judge has not reached a decision as to whether or not the video will be shown to the jurors.

Two Held in Connection With El Camino Real High School Student's Death

An El Camino Real High School student was killed last week in front of his family’s home. According to the Los Angeles Times, law enforcement believe that the young victim might have had a romantic relationship with a woman who had a jealous male friend.

Two people are now behind bars for the shooting death of the high school student, a 24-year-old Jason Schumann and a 19-year-old Elizabeth Ibarra. They are being held for the death of Francisco “Pancho” Rodriguez Jr.

According to reports, someone knocked on Rodriguez’s door and asked specifically for the high school student. The shooting victim had apparently just gotten home from a soccer game. When he went outside, he was shot.

Supposedly, Schumann has an extensive criminal history, which includes such things as battery, assault with a deadly weapon, drug charges, and forgery. Ibarra also apparently has a criminal record, which includes battery on a police officer, forgery, identity theft, and resisting arrest.

Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Jorge Villegas said that law enforcement has received many anonymous tips from people across the country. However, the investigation is still ongoing and Villegas has described the case as “far from being over.”

Nearly 250 Arrested for Suspected Los Angeles DUI Over Holiday Weekend

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) was in full swing over the New Year’s holiday weekend, which began on Friday, December 30, 2011. About 250 drivers were arrested for suspected driving under the influence (DUI) in Los Angeles County.

According to NBC Los Angeles, the CHP employed its maximum enforcement over the holiday in an effort to catch drunk drivers. The results were 248 arrests, which is up from 2010, when the number of arrests was 228. These numbers reflect a 9 percent increase this year in the amount of alleged drunk drivers.

Statewide, there were 1,181 DUI arrests, which is also higher than 2010 when 961 were arrested. This year, there were 18 traffic deaths reported over the holiday weekend in California.

Trespasser Arrested at Lohan's Venice Beach Home

Lindsay Lohan is in the news again, but this time it has nothing to do with her committing an alleged crime.

According to various news reports, police were called after someone Lohan didn’t know showed up at her California house on New Year’s Day. The incident took place at Lohan’s home in Venice Beach.

Supposedly, 64-year-old Lonnie Short scared the actress after knocking on her door and demanding to speak with her. When Lohan asked Short what he wanted, he said cryptically that he needed to talk with her. She requested that Short leave, but he refused. This was a cause for alarm, and the police were quickly contacted. It is unclear if Lohan made the call for help or if someone else made it.

The police arrived at Lohan’s home and arrested Short. According to booking documents that TMZ.com cited, Short was held on $1,000 bail.

Lohan is no stranger to the law. She was convicted of driving under the influence (DUI) back in 2007 and is currently performing community service.

Reagan Statue Damaged by Vandalism in Newport Beach

The state of California considers vandalism as a criminal offense, which can lead to jail time. In Los Angeles, and Orange County specifically, the prosecution comes down hard on alleged vandals.

A recent event in Newport Beach has brought the seriousness of vandalism to light. According to CBS Los Angeles, the bronze statue of President Ronald Reagan that stands in the Bonita Canyon Sports Park was vandalized. Officials report that a few weeks ago, a call came in during the early hours on a Sunday morning.

Supposedly, a witness spotted a man tying something around the top of the statue and then attaching the other end to the front of his pickup truck. The witness went on to describe the situation by stating the man put the car in reverse in what appeared to be an attempt to knock the statue over or possibly steal it.

The statue was reportedly damaged and was removed from the park. It is not clear whether the Reagan statute will be replaced. Estimates put the statue’s value at around $60,000.

Two Young Suspects Arrested for Korean Church Fire in North Hills

About a week ago, a Korean church in North Hills was the target of alleged arson, vandalism and burglary. The most recent reports show that the alleged perpetrators were two juveniles, ages 12 and 13.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to “reported smoke,” at a Korean church located on Plummer Street. The firefighters were able to squelch the flames quickly, but the fire wasn’t the only alleged damage. Supposedly, the two vandals had written racial comments and graffiti on the walls and floor in one of the building’s rooms.

The Los Angeles Fire Department and Los Angeles Police Department worked together to identify the two alleged vandals. The young suspects were arrested, but eventually released to their parents. It is still not clear how they will be charged. The case is now in the hands of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. So far, it doesn’t appear that any other suspects are being considered in connection with the alleged crime.

Conrad Murray Supposedly Treated Differently in Jail

In a case that riveted the nation, Dr. Conrad Murray was found guilty in connection with Michael Jackson’s death. Murray was the personal physician to Jackson and is now behind bars.
According to the Huffington Post, Murray has been under tight security in jail and has been placed in isolation. Charles Peckham, Murray’s attorney, told reporters that his client is being treated differently than other inmates at the jail and has been subject to more security. Peckham claims that his client has appeared in jailhouse meetings wearing heavy shackles.
Peckham even went as far as comparing the situation to that of Hannibal Lecter, a character who was a serial killer in movies and in books.
However, according to the sheriff’s office, they are taking these security measures to protect Murray. “(Murray) is a real target because of his notoriety and because of the Michael Jackson connection. We’re just being extra cautious right now,” said Steve Whitmore, a sheriff spokesperson.
It doesn’t appear that the plan is to have Murray serve his entire jail term in isolation, but for the time being, his safety is an issue.
Despite all of the media attention and additional security measures, Murray is supposedly staying positive. He hopes that he will win an upcoming appeal. The former Jackson physician has been in jail since a Los Angeles jury found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the beginning of November.

Over 22,000 Jail Beds Full by Christmas, Says L.A. County

It has only been two months since a shift in California law took effect. Now, judges are not able to sentence some criminals to state prison; instead, they are required to send them to county jails. As a result, counties across the state are becoming overcrowded quickly.

For people found guilty of such crimes as auto theft, grand theft, drug possession for sale, and burglary. Even Conrad Murray, who was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson, will be serving his time in Los Angeles County jail.

This change in the law was brought on by the budget deficit in California. In addition, a federal court order is forcing the state to reduce the number of inmates in prison by 33,000, in an attempt to boost medical care.

Los Angeles County has been hit hard with the new law. Originally, it was estimated that over 22,000 jail beds could be filled by the time Christmas arrives. However, this projection was later pushed back. Regardless, there is a good chance that those who have been convicted of lesser crimes could be released early. In lieu of jail time, many convicted criminals may be required to wear GPS-lined ankle bracelets so that they can be tracked.

DUI Arrests Higher This Thanksgiving in L.A. Than Previous Year

As many people ended the day of turkey eating, giving thanks, and celebrating with family members with a good night’s sleep, some others spent the holiday in jail. According to the California Highway Patrol, more alleged drunk drivers were arrested over the holiday weekend than last year.

In Los Angeles County alone, arrests for driving under the influence (DUI) was up 7 percent this year. That means about 200 people were arrested for DUI. Last year, the number of arrests reached 182.

These figures go beyond just the day of Thanksgiving. They include the entire 4-day weekend – from Thursday through Sunday, which translates into a 96-hour period.

Even though the arrests were high this year, there were no deaths reported in Los Angeles County involving DUI. In 2010, 4 people were killed in Los Angeles car accidents over the holiday weekend and 11 lost their lives across the state of California.

Los Angeles DUI Charges Dismissed for Former Nickelodeon Star

A couple of months ago, we wrote about former Nickelodeon star Ryan Rottman who had been accused of DUI in Los Angeles. He had denied driving drunk and it looks like he finally gotten some welcomed news.

According to E! Online, the star of the canceled show, Gigantic, was able to get his DUI charges dismissed. Apparently, he agreed to plea to a lesser charge of alcohol-related reckless driving. That charge is considered a misdemeanor and does not come with jail time.

Rottman isn’t fully off the hook, as he will be required to pay a $390 fine and will be placed on probation for three years. He will also have to attend an alcohol education course that spans three months.

At the time of his DUI arrest, Rottman had pleaded not guilty, even though Breathalyzer results showed that he had a 0.19 blood alcohol level, which is well over the legal limit. According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), he smelled of alcohol at the time and failed a field sobriety test.

Surveillance Cameras Installed Throughout L.A. to Catch Criminals

Watch out! You could be on camera.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has been busy installing 23 wireless surveillance cameras throughout Mission, Foothill, and Southwest Los Angeles. Where can you find these cameras? They have been strategically placed on traffic lights and light poles within high crime neighborhoods.

Surveillance cameras are not new to the LAPD. They started installing these devices a few years ago; however, the first wireless cameras were not utilized until last year. Based on a press release, these cameras have helped the LAPD make arrests related to drugs, vandalism, and even pirated DVD sales.

The latest cameras, which were installed by Wi4Net and paid for by funds for city redevelopment, have the capability to recognize a subject that is up to 600 feet away. Yet, since the system is reliant on optical zoom, it does need the assistance of a human operator or computer program to zoom correctly. The LAPD has assigned volunteers and officers to monitor the cameras during peak crime periods.

The goal of these cameras is to reduce crime in the area. There are plans to expand the installation of these devices to additional areas, including Topanga and the West Valley.

These cameras have been met with opposition, as they are costly to install. A study was also conducted in 2008 that seems to reinforce the criticism. According to the study, surveillance cameras in Los Angeles haven't made an impact on the amount of crime.

Chicago Bulls Guard's Link to a Los Angeles DUI Arrest

Chicago Bulls player Derrick Rose found himself the topic of conversation in the media, and it wasn't because of a recent game. Instead, it was for his connection to a DUI arrest in Los Angeles.

According to the Huffington Post, Rose's buddy was arrested in the early-morning hours last month when he was accused of drunk driving. 23-year-old Rose was a passenger in his friend's black BMW when the event occurred. The vehicle was pulled over by a police officer about 2:00 AM.

Supposedly, police could smell alcohol in the vehicle and eventually Randall Hampton, Rose's friend, the driver, was taken into custody for alleged DUI. Allegedly, the police suspected Hampton might be drunk after he took a field sobriety test. Rose was not arrested.

About an hour after Hampton was arrested and booked, Rose left the LAPD station. Hampton's bail was set at $5,000. Reportedly, he was released a few hours after his arrest.

Rose is considered one of the NBA's most valuable players. According to reports, he attended a Texas junior college with Hampton, where both played basketball.

Michael Jackson Case Ends in Manslaughter Charges

The nation held its breath as it awaited the jury verdict in the case of Michael Jackson's death.

A jury in California found Dr. Conrad Murray, Jackson's former personal physician, guilty of involuntary manslaughter. Murray had been accused of causing Jackson's demise in 2009 by administering a strong anesthetic to the singer.

According to the story, Jackson had been having trouble sleeping and had asked for medication to help him. Apparently, Murray gave the pop singer propofol, a powerful surgical anesthetic, to help him sleep. Based on witness testimony, the medication was given in an unmonitored setting. However, that wasn't the only alleged problem. Supposedly, Murray struggled with basic resuscitation and failed to keep records. Witnesses even claimed that he waited to call for help and lied to emergency responders and doctors.

The prosecution told the jury that while Jackson laid in his bed in distress, Murray made phone calls and checked email and text messages.

Allegedly, Murray did not come forward about giving Jackson propofol until police interviewed him two days after the singer's death. He claimed that he eventually gave in to Jackson's repeated requests for the drug.

Murray is now looking at a maximum sentence of four years in state prison. The involuntary manslaughter charge, of which he was found guilty, is the lowest homicide offense in California.

Child Sex Abuse Allegations at Heart of Penn State Scandal

News broke recently which has caused a major uproar across the country. A scandal now surrounds Penn State involving well-known coach Joe Paterno.

According to allegations, former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky sexually abused at least eight boys over a 15-year period. He has even been accused of sexually assaulting some of the boys in the football locker room showers.

Paterno has been criticized for not going to the police to report the allegations against his former assistant coach. He was supposed to hold a press conference on Tuesday, November 8, 2011, to answer the numerous questions surrounding the Penn State scandal, but it was cancelled. Paterno told reporters who saw him getting into his car, "I know you guys have a lot of questions. I was hoping I could answer them today. We'll try to do it as soon as we can."

Some top university officials have also been accused of attempting to cover up at least one sexual abuse claim. However, the two officials have said they are innocent.

New California Law and Its Impact on Local Sentences

There has been much talk regarding the new California sentencing law that is supported by Governor Jerry Brown. The new law took effect a few weeks ago and is supposed to change the way that nonviolent crimes are sentenced.

Based on this law, those who are convicted of nonviolent or non-serious crimes will be looking at time spent in county jails instead of state prison. The hope is that by making this change, the state will not only be able to save some money, but it will also prevent overcrowding.

This law hasn't been met without skepticism. In fact, The Associated Press began its own investigation into the impact this law is having. In an article titled, "AP Exclusive: New Calif law broadly defines crimes," the publication discloses that it has done a review of "crimes that qualify for local sentences." According to The Associated Press, "at least two dozen offenses shifting to local control" can be considered violent or serious.

Some of the offenses that The Associated Press identified include involuntary manslaughter, killing a police officer while resisting arrest, and possession of weapons of mass destruction. Many people wouldn't consider these offenses to be minor.

The California State Attorney General's office responded to The Associated Press' review by stating the information was correct, but that "defendants with a previous felony conviction or those charged with enhancements would still be sent to state prison."

Lindsay Lohan Faces Assault Charges Involving Event at Clinic

Lindsay Lohan is having legal trouble again. This time, it's for alleged assault charges in California. According to reports, the young female actress has been accused of assaulting Dawn Bradley, a former employee of the Betty Ford Clinic. The incident happened in 2010, but she was recently served a lawsuit in connection with it.

Apparently, Lohan was at the courthouse in Los Angeles for a progress hearing regarding her community service, when she was served papers from Bradley's attorneys. Based on the lawsuit, Lohan allegedly grabbed Bradley's wrist and twisted it when Bradley attempted to make Lohan use a breathalyzer.

Lohan had been a patient of the clinic at the time of the alleged assault. Bradley claims that she believed Lohan had consumed alcohol with friends, which violates the policy of the clinic. That is what prompted Bradley to administer the breathalyzer.

Bradley is requesting at least $1 million in damages in the lawsuit. According to her claim, she experienced a great deal of mental and physical pain and suffering.

Lohan had originally been at the courthouse for her community service that stemmed from a shoplifting conviction. As if getting served with the assault lawsuit wasn't bad enough for Lohan, she also ended up behind bars after the judge revoked her probation.

Rodney King's California DUI Arraignment Postponed

Rodney King is no stranger to the media. He is most known for his link to the Los Angeles riots that occurred over two decades ago. Now, he is in the headlines once again.

King has been accused of DUI after being pulled over on July 12, 2011. Apparently, he had violated numerous traffic laws on the streets of Moreno Valley. The sheriff's deputies who had stopped King had him complete a field sobriety test. Apparently, the results weren't good for King, as he was arrested for alleged DUI. According to news reports, King said he was using marijuana, but had a doctor's recommendation to do so.

His arraignment was scheduled for October 5, 2011, but will be postponed until November 7, 2011. King's attorney told the Commissioner that she needed more time to go over the case with her client. Her request was granted and the arraignment was delayed for a month.

The decision made by a California Court of Appeal could change the way that cities handle medical marijuana. This case involves the city of Long Beach and its marijuana dispensary law.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Long Beach regulated medical marijuana by holding a lottery and giving permits to the winners. The city also charged fees. The Court of Appeal's opinion was that regulating the drug this way conflicted with the federal Controlled Substances Act. Under this federal law, marijuana possession is illegal.

Possessing marijuana is illegal in the state of California as well. However, many cities have ordinances in place that allow the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. They decide who can sell the drug and then closely supervise the sellers.

A Blow to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. After Alleged Assault

A recent case has stirred debate and controversy regarding an incident that occurred inside the Twin Towers jail. According to the Los Angeles Times, it seems as though an inmate who is being charged with assaulting two deputies might be acquitted.

The event in question has led to a federal civil rights investigation. It all started when American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) jail monitor Esther Lim was at the jail and supposedly witnessed 35-year-old James Parker being assaulted by deputies. According to Lim, Parker was like a mannequin, lying on the floor when the deputies continued to beat him. She didn't keep this information to herself; instead, she went public with it.

Even though the incident has prompted an investigation by the FBI, Los Angeles County decided to move forward with the case against Parker.

Parker was charged with assault, but Lim testified in his defense. It is believed that her testimony could have helped his case. The case against Parker ended in a mistrial, and it is not clear whether he will be retried.

Both deputies involved in the alleged Los Angeles jail assault have denied any wrongdoing.

The Los Angeles Times referred to the mistrial as "a blow to the Sheriff's Department as it faces FBI scrutiny of alleged inmate abuse and other deputy misconduct inside its jails."

Outstanding Warrant Lands Actor in Los Angeles Jail

According to the actor's rep, it was simply a clerical error.

KTLA reported that Natural Born Killers actor Tom Sizemore, was arrested in Los Angeles for an outstanding warrant stemming from a misdemeanor battery charge. He was only incarcerated briefly, due to the fact that he was released on $26,000 bail.

Sizemore has had many run-ins with the law in the past. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he was previously arrested for domestic violence and supposedly had a substance abuse problem. In 2003, he was convicted of assault and battery involving Heidi Fleiss, the notorious "Hollywood Madame."

Apparently, when police showed up at Sizemore's house the day he was arrested for the outstanding warrant, they were there because of a different matter. It wasn't until the police checked their list that they realized Sizemore had not completed community service for one of his sentences. Sizemore's representative claimed it was a clerical error and that he had finished his community service hours entirely.

Not long after the incident, Sizemore made a post on Twitter, which basically alluded to much misinformation about him, and the truth would come out. He even thanked his fans for their ongoing support.

Sizemore is set to appear in court on October 14, 2011 regarding this most recent issue with the law.

Former Nickelodeon TV Star Denied DUI Charge

Another story impacting Hollywood hit the news the last week of August. According to reports from TMZ.com, a former Nickelodeon TV star was accused of driving under the influence (DUI).

The TV star, Ryan Rottman, pleaded not guilty to a drunken-driving charge in Los Angeles. Apparently, he had been found driving with a blood-alcohol of .19, which is more than two times the legal limit in the state of California. The incident occurred in July.

The former star of Gigantic had supposedly been at a bar in Hollywood with his good buddy, Zac Effron, another well-known young Hollywood actor.

Based on the news reports, Rottman is claiming that he wasn't driving at the time he was pulled over.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Rottman is supposed to become a cast member of the popular 90210 show, for at least one of the episodes.

Rapper Won't Be Arrested for Alleged Assault

According to Los Angeles police, there were no plans to arrest rapper, Game, whose real name is Jayceon Terrell Taylor, after he was accused of alleged assault in a nightclub in Hollywood. The incident occurred at the end of August.

Los Angeles Times reported that the person who claimed the rapper assaulted him had the right to make a citizen's arrest, which generally involves a crime that was not witnessed by police.

The alleged incident occurred at the Colony nightclub located on Cahuenga Boulevard. The police came to the scene and talked with both men, but ended up deciding not to make any arrests, despite the fact that the man said Game hit him.

According to Los Angeles Times, video surveillance captured part of the incident in question. The news source reported the video showed Game being held back by the people who were with him that night.

This isn't the first time that this Grammy Award-winning rapper has had a run-in with police. Back in 2007, Game was arrested for threatening someone with a handgun during a South Los Angeles basketball game. He served three years of probation after pleading guilty to the weapons charge.

Rapper T.I. Back in Prison After Being Released to a Halfway House

It wasn’t long after his release that Rapper T.I. found himself right back in prison.

According to Forbes.com, Clifford Harris, Jr., better known as Rapper T.I., was released from a minimum security prison on September 1, 2011. He was to go to a halfway house to finish out his time for an illegal weapons charge.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had caught the Grammy award winning rapper allegedly trying to buy three machine guns and silencers in a shopping center parking lot. Rapper T.I. had accepted a plea deal that allowed him to serve only one year in prison and 1,500 hours of community service. If he had gone to trial and was found guilty, he could have been looking at ten years or more in jail.

T.I. and his group were greeted by federal authorities at the halfway house and T.I. was taken back into custody. He was sent to a medium security prison where he will more than likely finish his sentence.

It is believed that the issues federal authorities had could have been related to how Rapper T.I. arrived at the halfway house. “Indiscretion” is generally recommended when traveling to the halfway house, but that wasn’t how T.I. arrived. He was picked up for the 375-mile journey from the prison to the halfway house in a luxury coach that was trailed by the old posse.

Former Disney Singer Arrested for DUI in Studio City

You may remember her as a former Disney singer, who delighted audiences with her musical talents. Now, the front singer of the all-girl band KSM, is getting a different kind of attention. Eighteen-year-old Shelby Cobra (who’s real last name is Spalione), is accused of driving under the influence (DUI).

According to TMZ.com reporters, the Disney celebrity was pulled over for suspected DUI in Studio City. The incident occurred on Friday, September 9, 2011. Apparently, this girl band member had a blood alcohol level of 0.15 percent, which is nearly two times the legal limit in California.

TMZ.com reported that Cobra was driving a Ford pickup truck through Studio City when the event occurred. It is believed that police pulled Cobra over because the dome light was illuminated in the cab and a passenger was not wearing a seat belt.

Cobra now joins many other young female celebrities who have been arrested for alleged DUI. She was apparently placed in jail in the Van Nuys station around 2:00 AM on Friday. Cobra remained at the jail for approximately nine hours.

Cobra formerly fronted the band that was a joint project with The Walt Disney Co. The band was formed in 2006, but broke up in 2010.

Two men, who allegedly committed a number of Southern California burglaries, were arrested earlier this month.

31-year-old Robert Messersmith of Torrance, California and 30-year-old William Fulton Jr. of Hawthorne, California were arrested during the service of a search warrant on July 21^st. They are facing multiple theft and weapon violation charges.

The Redondo Beach Police have recovered a large amount of stolen goods including home electronics, bikes, jewelry and construction equipment. In all, the police have already linked the two burglars to half a dozen local burglaries.

Although it has been less than a month since the two burglars have been arrested, some of the stolen goods have already been returned to the rightful owners; however, many of the rightful owners have not yet been identified. In an attempt to match the stolen goods with their original owners, the Redondo Beach Police have set up a website which contains photos of many of the stolen items. Some of the items that still need to be identified include tools and construction equipment, which appear to have been taken from a construction business or work site.

Police Arrest Father and Daughter for Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Incident

On August 9^th, 2011, both a father and his daughter were arrested for their involvement in a California hit-and-run accident.

The accident occurred on April 20^th, 2011, when a 17-year-old Chatsworth High School senior was struck and killed by their 2003 Toyota Corolla in Los Angeles, California. The victim, German Alex Romero, was riding his bicycle with another friend on De Soto Avenue near Valerio Street when he was hit.

The daughter, 23-year-old Dominique Rush of Oxnard, was charged with a felony hit-and-run and gross vehicular manslaughter. She was held at the Van Nuys jail with a $100,000 bail.

The father, 44-year-old Steven Rush of Porter Ranch, was arrested for allegedly helping his daughter conceal a crime after the fact. He was also held at the Van Nuys jail with a $20,000 bail.

Press coverage of the tragic event helped to provide tips from the general public regarding the accident. As a result, while the case originally had a minimum number of leads, the Valley Traffic detectives were eventually able to make two arrests.

NY Ranger Player Sean Avery Arrested for Police Battery in California

In the early morning of Friday, August 5^th, 2011, New York Ranger hockey player Sean Avery was arrested at his Los Angeles, California home. According to reports, police visited Avery's Hollywood Hills home following a noise complaint. That night, the thirty-one year old was reportedly holding a party at his residence. When the police arrived at the residence, Avery allegedly pushed the police officer and slammed the door.

After this incident, Avery apparently cooperated with the police. He was arrested for battery on a peace officer and taken to jail. Approximately seven hours after his initial arrest, Avery posted a $20,000 bail and was released.

Lindsay Lohan's Ex, DJ Samantha Ronson, Arrested for DUI in California

Celebrity DJ Samantha Ronson, who is perhaps best known to the public as being Lindsay Lohan's ex-girlfriend, was arrested on the morning of August 1, 2011 on the suspicion of driving under the influence in California.

According to a police report, the 33-year-old was arrested outside of Baker, California at approximately 9:48 a.m. Ronson was apparently driving home from a Las Vegas show at the Palazzo Hotel when her Porsche was pulled over one hundred miles northeast of Los Angeles.

According to a police officer, Ronson was originally pulled over for speeding; however, upon further observation, she appeared to be exhibiting signs of intoxication. Consequently, the police officer asked her to perform field sobriety tests, which she failed. She also blew a 0.08 on a breathalyzer, just breaching the legal limit.

Ronson was arrested for a DUI and was taken to the San Bernardino County Jail. She was released later the same evening.

Clark Gable's Grandson Arrested for Pointing Laser at LAPD Helicopter

On July 29^th, 2011, Clark Gable's grandson was released from jail after he was arrested for allegedly pointing a laser towards a police officer helicopter in Hollywood, California. Clark Gable is a famous American actor who, perhaps, is best-known for playing the character of Rhett Butler in the 1939 movie, Gone with the Wind.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), Clark Gable's twenty-two year old grandson was arrested later in the evening at the La Brea Avenue and Sunset Boulevard intersection. The LAPD states that, while Gable was driving in Hollywood, he pointed a laser at a police helicopter. He then was charged with a felony count of "discharging a laser."

Upon being released from jail, Gable expressed to a local television station that this event was a mistake. He stated that he received the laser as a gift and that "people make mistakes and that's the bottom line. I'm going to learn from it and hopefully others will.''

Outkast Rapper, Big Boi, Arrested in Miami on Drug Possession Charges

Miami authorities arrested Grammy-winning Outkast rapper, Big Boi, on suspicion of illegally possession of drugs, authorities said.

Per the Miami-Dade County Corrections Department, Big Boi, whose real name is Antwan Patton, was charged with one count of possessing of drug paraphernalia as well as three counts of possessing a controlled substance. The allegedly-possesed controlled substances ecstasy, MDMA and Viagra. Authorities state he did not have a prescription for Viagra.

Mr. Patton had recently released a remix of the song "Tears Dry on Their Own" (an Amy Winehouse song) and had been touring with Cee-Lo Green.

Torrance Male Stabbed 4 People with Beer Bottle on the Fourth of July

During the afternoon of July 4, 2011, a nineteen-year-old male from Torrance allegedly used a broken bottle to stab four individuals.

Hermosa Beach Police blamed the violence on the larger-than-average crowds and the fact that some people drank too much alcohol. More specifically, fights among eighteen- to twenty-year-old males took place near Second Street, where it is believed that males in rival schools from Redondo Beach and Torrance were hanging out.

The male who was accused of the stabbing was arrested around 3:40 p.m. at the corner of the Strand and 2^nd Street. He then was taken to the Hermosa Beach Police Department jail. Meanwhile, the four stabbing victims were treated at a hospital. They were later released with non-life threatening injuries.

Other incidents took place in this area on the Fourth of July as well. For instance, a male and another individual grabbed a phone and wallet from someone at Pier Plaza. While the items were returned to the individual later, two hundred dollars had been taken from the wallet.

Another incident occurred on Beach Drive's 100 block, where a man was kicked in the head during a fight in the evening. After the fight, the man lost consciousness.

Towards the evening on July 4^th, police calls mainly centered on noise complaints from various house parties.

Man Arrested in Torrance for Parking Lot Stabbing

A 53-year-old Hawthorne man named Elar Camacho was arrested on June 30, 2011 with an attempted murder charge. Camacho allegedly stabbed a business associate twice in the abdominal area on June 29^th after an argument arose between the two of them on the 2700 block of Artesia Boulevard in Redondo Beach, California.

Following the incident, Camacho allegedly left the scene. The victim, a 40-year-old Lawndale resident, entered a nearby business and was immediately taken to the hospital by friends. Once at the hospital, officials there notified the Redondo Beach Police Department.

The RBPD then began to search for Camacho, and the following day, a witness notified the Torrance Police Department that Camacho was in Torrance at the Roadium Open Air Market. When the Torrance police officers arrived on the scene, Camacho was arrested and turned over to the RBPD. He then was held on a $1,030,000 bail.

With respect to the victim, surgery and stitches were required, but he was in stable condition.

Former Diamond Bar PTA Members Allegedly Involved in Ponzi Scheme

Three former Diamond Bar PTA members have been arrested for allegedly operating a Ponzi scheme. Specifically, 50-year-old Julianna Menefee, 41-year-old Maricela Barajas, and 51-year-old Eva Perez - who is currently serving an 11-year state prison sentence - apparently defrauded over forty people of more than $14 million dollars.

In addition, all three of the women have at least twenty counts of securities fraud and grand theft. Barajas, Menefee, and Perez each face twenty years in jail.

According to reports, the women gained the trust of a number of their victims via PTA school functions. The investors believed that they were investing in a company called AltaDena Dairy. The women told the investors that they would receive high rates of returns, as the company held the exclusive rights to distribute its products at Disney Hotels, Disneyland, etc.

Between the years of 2008 and 2010, many individuals gave the women money for the investment. In fact, one individual invested over $200,000. However, when not enough new people invested in this scheme, there wasn't cash to sustain it. As a result, the scheme collapsed, and the police were notified.

Torrance Man Posed as Parking Attendant to Earn Rent Money

Alexei Maine Fleming, a Torrance, California resident, allegedly impersonated a parking attendant in Hermosa Beach to earn rent money.

The 21-year-old held a receipt book, a two-way radio, and a sign declaring that the parking meters weren't working - and thus, parking for the day was available at a cost of $3.

When the police arrived on the scene near 13^th Street at about 6 p.m. that day, Fleming allegedly admitted to collecting money for parking on both June 17^th and June 18^th in order to pay for his rent. Fleming was subsequently arrested for suspicion of theft and taken to the Hermosa Beach jail. After he posted a $500 bail, Fleming was released.

Fleming holds a security guard license, and reportedly had recently moved out of his mother's house to live with a neighbor.

CA Man Arrested after Using $110,000 Mistakenly Given to Him by IRS

In September of 2010, the IRS mistakenly deposited $110,000 into Laguna Beach resident Stephen McDow's bank account.

The money was originally intended for a 67-year-old woman. However, the woman neglected to tell the IRS that the bank account that she had on file was now closed. As a result, the IRS deposited the money into the back account of McDow, who currently holds the bank account number that once belonged to the woman.

When the woman found out that McDow had the IRS refund that was originally meant for her, she attempted to obtain the money from McDow by herself. However, as McDow had already spent over half of the money - around $60,000 - on his mortgage and other debts, he offered to pay the debt off in monthly installments. The woman in question declined these terms, and McDow was charged with a grand theft by misappropriation of lost property felony shortly thereafter.

Held on bail for $110,000, McDow faces four years in jail if he is convicted of this crime.

Former NFL Player to Stand Trial for Alleged Involvement in Murder

A former NFL player is to stand trial with two other men for the murder of a Lancaster man in 2008. Anthony Wayne Smith, 43, played football at the University of Arizona. In the 1990 draft, Smith was the top pick by the LA Raiders. His seven-year professional football career with the Raiders lasted from 1991 to 1998.

Smith will go to trial for the murder of 31-year-old Maurilio Ponce, which occurred on October 7, 2008. Also charged are 41-year-old Charles Eric Honest, of Los Angeles, and 32-year-old Dewann Wesley White, of Bloomington, California.

Ponce was reportedly beaten and shot multiple times with a gun before his body was left about eleven miles from Lancaster. The three suspects were arrested in early March 2011, after the LA County Sheriff's Department filed a felony complaint for an arrest.

All of the defendants were specifically charged with one count of murder. According to the prosecutors, Honest was charged with voluntary manslaughter in Torrance in 1996.

Shaquille O'Neal's Acquaintance Arrested for Alleged Kidnapping

Seven gang members have been arrested on kidnapping, assault, and robbery charges in Los Angeles, California. These alleged incidents happened in 2008 after victim Robert Ross stated that he owned a tape showing Shaquille O'Neal sleeping with other women while still married to his now ex-wife Shaunie.

Ladell Rowles, one of the Main Street Mafia Crip gang members and an alleged friend of Shaquille O'Neal, reportedly tried to steal this tape from Ross with the help of six other individuals.

According to a police report, the seven individuals encountered Ross at a Sunset Strip convenience store just prior to the incident. Then, the group of seven allegedly surrounded the Rolls Royce that Ross was driving. The gang members were armed with guns.

These individuals then allegedly entered the car and made Ross drive to Ladell Rowles's South Central L.A. home. Once there, Ross allegedly was pistol whipped and told to give up the sex tape. Next, Ross apparently disclosed that the tape was at his own home. Before they let Ross go to retrieve it, the group allegedly stole some of his belongings along with $15,000.

Shaquille O'Neal, at the time of publishing, was not suspected of involvement in this incident, but Los Angeles Police Department officers did interview the athlete to determine whether or not he was in fact involved.

Former CSI Star Charged with Drug Possession after Los Angeles Crash

Gary Dourdan, formerly on the television series CSI, was arrested after he allegedly crashed into two parked vehicles in the early morning hours of June 13, 2011 in Los Angeles, California.

Police officers apparently found ecstasy pills on Dourdan, and he subsequently was arrested with a felony drug possession charge. Soon after the 44-year-old actor was booked at the LAPD's Pacific Community Station, he posted a $10,000 bail and was released. He's due back in court for a July 7^th hearing.

Dourdan has another drug possession charge on his record. In 2008, he was arrested in Indio, California when police officers discovered that he was sleeping behind the wheel of his vehicle. The police officers then proceeded to charge him with possession of cocaine, heroin, and ecstasy. Actress Lindsay Lohan Sentenced to House Arrest in Venice, California

In May of 2011, Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to house arrest after turning herself in three weeks early for a conviction of jewelry theft.

When Lohan showed up at a Los Angeles-based jail to begin her 120-day sentence, she was instead placed under house arrest. Authorities at the jail stated that the facility was overcrowded at the time.

The 24-year-old previously pleaded no contest to stealing a necklace that was worth approximately $2,500. Along with her jail sentence, Lohan was ordered by the judge to complete 480 hours of community service and to remain under supervised probation until this community service is completed.

In order to ensure that she remains in her Venice, California home, an electronic bracelet was placed on Lohan's ankle. In addition, the amount of time that she will be under house arrest may be reduced. The spokesperson at the jail explained that due to budget issues and a federal consent decree that requires the jail to circumvent the overcrowding situation, offenders of non-violent crimes can get their original sentences reduced by one-fifth.

Former MLB Player Lenny Dykstra Charged with 23 Felonies

Former professional baseball player Lenny Dykstra was recently charged with a total of 23 counts of felony, including drug, fraud, and attempted grand theft auto charges.

Dykstra, 48, began his professional baseball career in 1985 at the age of 22, when he was drafted by the New York Mets. Just one year later, Dykstra and his team won the World Series over the Boston Red Sox. In 1989, he was traded to Philadelphia, and the rest of his career was a series of ups and downs, including steroid use allegations. When he retired, Dykstra's total Major League Baseball earnings were $36.5 million.

In April of 2011, Dykstra reportedly leased luxury cars from various car dealerships by claiming credit from a fake business and providing fraudulent information. Robert Hymers, 27, and Christopher Gavanis, 30, were arrested in conjunction with this case as well. During the arrest, ecstasy, cocaine, and a synthetic HGH were found in Dykstra's Encino, California home.

Then, in May of this year, Dykstra was additionally charged with federal bankruptcy for allegedly selling items worth over $400,000 from his mansion. Woman Allegedly Attempts to Sell Moon Rock in Lake Elsinore, California

In May of 2011, a woman in Lake Elsinore, California - approximately seventy miles southeast of LA - was taken in for questioning after allegedly attempting to sell a moon rock for the sum of $1.7 million.

More specifically, the person to whom the woman attempted to sell the moon rock was actually an undercover NASA agent. Thus, when the woman revealed the moon rock to the interested party, several agents from NASA and other investigators took possession of the moon rock and detained the subject.

Many moon rocks were collected during the Apollo missions that took place in the 1960s and 1970s. Afterwards, these moon rocks were bestowed to various state governments in the United States as well as to various countries worldwide.

Selling real pieces of the moon - or US national treasures - is illegal according to federal laws. In general, people in possession of these items can charged with government property theft.

It is important to keep in mind that lunar meteorites are completely legal to sell. Since this moon rock needs to be assessed to determine its authenticity, the woman was not immediately arrested. However, if the rock turns out to be a fake, she could be charged with fraud.

Fireman Allegedly Caught Shoplifting at a Costco in Torrance, California

A El Segundo, California firefighter, Michael Archambault, was recently arrested for allegedly shoplifting at Costco store. The fifty-two year old was arrested in April of 2011 at a Costco at 2751 Skypark Drive in Torrance, California. by Torrance police officers after he allegedly stole $375 in electronics from a Costco in Torrance.

According to reports, loss-prevention officers at the store noticed that Archambault took about $375 worth of electronics - that included a Motorola modem, ink cartridges, ear buds, a Belkin router, and a Waterpik Tooth Cleaner - and then placed these items in a garbage can. He then reportedly paid $47.99 for the garbage can and the hidden electronic devices.

Upon leaving this Costco store, he apparently was detained and then handed over to Torrance police officers when they arrived at the store. A few subsequent hours later, Archambault reportedly posted a $1000 bail.

This arrest was controversial in the El Segundo area as the fire fighter annual salary is approximately $210,000. Since the town is a small one with a population of 16,000 with fewer than two actual fires per year, many El Segundo residents were reportedly upset about the arrest.

Actress Estella Warren Arrested for DUI, Felony Battery and Escape Charges near West Hollywood

Estella Warren, a Planet of the Apes actress and former model, was arrested after being involved in an automobile crash shortly after 12 am on May 25, 2011.

According to reports, Warren was driving her vehicle near West Hollywood when she allegedly hit three parked vehicles. Reports state that police officers were notified as she attempted to leave the scene of this accident. When the police did arrive at the scene, Warren was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence (DUI).

At about the same time, Warren allegedly assaulted a police officer and in turn was arrested for the crime of felony battery on a police officer. Once at the police station in a holding room, Warren allegedly was able to slip out of the handcuffs that a police officer put on her - and then ran out of a police station door. However, this escape attempt was an extremely brief one as she police officers recaptured Warren immediately. She was then also charged with a felony escape charge - in addition to her other two charges. As of May 25, 2011, Warren was still in police custody, as her bail of $100, 000 had not yet been posted.

Torrance Woman Allegedly Brandishes a Gun on the Beach

Recently, a forty-year-old Torrance woman was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon in California. According to reports, she allegedly pointed what looked like a .45-caliber handgun at people, including children, on the beach.

According to Manhattan Beach Police Detective Michael Rosenberger, Alena Tam was allegedly aiming a gun at people who were walking on the sand toward the beach and at bicyclists using the bike path. After some onlookers reported this incident to the police and informed Tam that the police were on their way, she allegedly put the gun away in a pouch and started to walk away from the beach.

Liza and Marcus Torres, a Redondo Beach couple, then apprehended Tam. Liza Torres apparently tried to take the pouch with the alleged weapon inside, and a physical struggle ensued. Other people allegedly assisted with the struggle and managed to hold Tam until the proper authorities came and arrested her.

Soon afterwards, it was apparently discovered that the .45-caliber handgun was actually an unloaded BB gun. Thus, Detective Rosenberger suggested that her charge may be reduced to brandishing a weapon in a threatening manner.

CA Student Allegedly Threw Flaming Object at Teacher, Stabbed Student

Jessie Morehead, an eighteen-year-old high school senior in Torrance, California, was recently arrested for allegedly throwing a burning paper towel roll at a teacher and stabbing a female classmate.

More specifically, this West High School student was arrested for charges that included attempted arson, assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a deadly weapon on a school campus.

According to reports, when Morehead was asked to sit down during a high school psychology class, he set a paper towel roll on fire and threw the flaming object at his teacher. He later apparently punched the same teacher. The high school psychology teacher called security and attempted to evacuate the classroom of her students. At this point, Morehead allegedly grabbed a female psychology classmate and stabbed her. Apparently, this classmate previously received love letters from Morehead but spurned his advances.

The female classmate suffered minor injuries as a result of the stabbing. Another male student reportedly tackled Morehead and held him until the police arrived to arrest him.

California Doctor Sentenced to Jail Time for Patient's Death

A Torrance-based judge sentenced Dr. Roberto Bonilla to six months in jail for a gall bladder surgery that resulted in the death of a patient. Dr. Bonilla has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter. His 30-year-old male patient died from an overdose of an anesthetic called Lidocaine. The operation occurred at Dr. Roberto Bonilla's clinic, located in a residence on Arbor Vitae Street in Inglewood, California.

Besides the jail term, the judge also placed Bonilla on five years probation and required that he perform 1,000 hours of community service. However, he was not permitted to offer medical care as part of this community service requirement.

Also, Bonilla's medical license was suspended by the judge until the state medical board makes a final decision regarding the license.

According to his attorney, Bonilla plans to appeal this case to a higher court.

Former Torrance Man Arrested for Wife's 1981 Death

Michael Clark, a 57-year-old man, was arrested recently at his Huntington Beach home on suspicion of killing his wife, Carol Jeanne Lubahn, in 1981. Charged with murder, Clark's arraignment is scheduled for April 25, 2011 in a Torrance, California court.

The couple had been married for ten years and had two children together when Lubahn went missing. Since his wife's 1981 disappearance, Michael Clark has insisted that she left him after an argument. According to statements from Clark, his wife tried to get him to sign some formal documents on the night of her disappearance, because she apparently wanted to sell their house. Soon afterwards, Clark was in bed when he heard the garage door open as his wife left.

He also stated that he thought that she would return in a few days, and thus he did not report his wife as missing immediately. Three years later, he divorced his wife in absentia.

Lubahn's body has never been found. Moreover, her credit cards and Social Security number have never been used.

Man Charged with Running a Phony Military Unit in California

A Chinese national, Yupeng "David" Deng, was arrested for allegedly running a fake military unit and recruiting members who paid him. Additionally, these members were led to believe that they would earn U.S. citizenship by joining the unit.

Deng was charged with thirteen counts of theft by false pretenses, counterfeit of an official government sea, and manufacturing deceptive government documents. He was then jailed and his bail was set at $500,000.

According to prosecutors, over one hundred Chinese nationals paid Deng initiation fees, ranging from $300 to $450, and then $120 in annual renewal fees. Further, it was reported that if any of the "recruits" wanted to get promoted, they had to make an additional donation.

Deng allegedly also issued all of the men a U.S. soldier uniform and official-looking ID cards. The recruits were asked to report to an office that looked like a U.S. army recruit center. At this office, Deng allegedly put the individuals through army-inspired drills, English courses, and other methods of learning. The "unit" even reportedly marched in a parade and visited the San Diego USS Midway museum.

Girl Hit by Elderly Driver in Torrance, California

A girl riding her bicycle was involved in a hit-and-run around 3:40 pm on April 7, 2011 at Madrona Avenue and Emerald Street in Torrance, California. A hit-and-run incident occurs when a driver involved in an accident leaves the scene without giving his or her personal identity – with the intent of avoiding punishment and/or the payment of damages.

Individuals who witnessed the accident followed the suspected car that hit the girl and reported the incident to the police. Police officers then apprehended the suspect, an 83-year-old male, near the accident scene.

The driver, however, was not taken into custody on account of a medical condition, his advanced age, and the fact that the police know exactly where he resides. However, as of April 8th, Torrance police officers planned on filing felony hit-and-run charges with the local District Attorney's Office. Also as of this date, the girl was in critical condition in the hospital.

Nineteen-Year-Old Female Hits a Group of Torrance Cyclists

A 19-year-old woman was arrested recently for allegedly driving under the influence (DUI). A DUI offense involves driving a vehicle while one is impaired from the effects of alcohol or drugs. According to the LA Times, the car that she was driving hit a group of about a dozen cyclists in Torrance as they rode their bikes on a residential street around 7:15 am on April 5, 2011.

Two of these cyclists suffered injuries as a result of this incident, with one sustaining critical injuries. More specifically, a 49-year-old male from South Bay was taken to County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in a coma with multiple fractured bones.

The driver holds a valid driver’s license and has no previous DUI arrests, although Department of Motor Vehicle records say that she has received a ticket for a U-turn violation and speeding tickets on three other occasions. The woman was released from jail on April 10, 2011, and will face her suspected DUI charges in court.

First-time DUI offenders in California are subject to both criminal and administrative charges. However, penalties that arise from a guilty DUI verdict are contingent on the facts of each individual case. Some of the criminal penalties that can result from a first-time DUI charge include a mandatory three-day jail incarceration with potential incarceration of up to six months, fines that range from $1,000-1,600, and a record for up to ten years.

Administrative first-time DUI penalties can include a suspension of a license for at least four months and an alcohol treatment or assessment evaluation. To reinstate a license, the installation of an ignition interlock device and SR-22 insurance coverage are required.

Indiana Financier Arrested, Released on Bond in Los Angeles

Indiana businessman Timothy Durham was released on bond from a federal detention center in Los Angeles on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, and will return to Indiana to face a trial.

Durham is accused of stealing over $200 million from 5,000 investors by running his Ohio-based company, Fair Finance, like a Ponzi scheme. He faces trial on or before April 4th.

Durham was arrested in Los Angeles on Wednesday, March 16th, and indicted on 12 counts that included conspiracy to commit wire and securities fraud, wire fraud, and securities fraud.

Durham posted $1 million for bond, and will live in Indiana in advance of his trial. He will be on home detention, with electronic monitoring.

Lindsay Lohan Turns Down Plea Deal, Will Have Trial

Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan faces theft charges. She will roll the dice at her upcoming trial, having recently turned down a plea deal from prosecutors.

Lohan is accused of stealing a $2,500 necklace from a Los Angeles jewelry store. She faces up to three years in California state prison if convicted, after turning down a plea deal that likely involved a shorter sentence.

"She's really rolling the dice here because she has a locked-in guaranteed good deal," legal analyst Robin Sax said. "She has a set limited amount of time under 60 days in county jail."

However, Lohan maintains that she was allowed to borrow the necklace from the jewelry store, and won't admit to doing something she didn't do. Lohan says that she returned the necklace to police soon afterward.

"Ms. Lohan has maintained her innocence from the moment this case was filed and she has never wavered," wrote Lohan's attorney Shawn Holley. "Though many advised her to follow the safe route by taking 'the deal,' the truth is, Ms. Lohan is innocent; she has a strong defense; and we are confident that a jury will listen to the evidence fairly and acquit her."

Lohan will be required to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on April 22, 2011. She has been to jail three times in the past three years for DUI, drug possession, and probation violations.

Pop star and celebrity Christina Aguilera was arrested last week in Los Angeles for being drunk in public. She was held briefly before being released.

Aguilera, 30, has been under criticism by friends and strangers alike after stumbling over words in the Super Bowl national anthem and falling down at the Grammys.

Aguilera was drunk in the passenger seat of a car belonging to her boyfriend, 25-year-old Matthew Rutler, when they were stopped at 2:45 a.m. in LA.

County Sheriff's Deputy Bill McSweeney said he pulled the couple over after their Mustang "burned rubber" and fishtailed out into the street. McSweeney said that Aguilera was "extremely intoxicated."

Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said that Aguilera was confused and disoriented, but agreed to take a breath test. She was booked, fingerprinted, and stayed alone in a cell until she sobered up.

"When she was able to navigate and think on her own," said Whitmore, "she was released." Aguilera was let free on $250 bail.

Lil' Wayne Backup Dancer Arrested for Theft in Los Angeles

Vikings Lineman Arrested in Los Angeles

Everson Griffen, the 23-year-old former USC standout and current Minnesota Vikings defensive end, was arrested in Los Angeles on Monday, January 31, 2011, after a routine traffic stop.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Griffen was pulled over by police near the USC campus at around 4 p.m. When the police asked for his license, which was expired, Griffen told them that he "did not want to go back to jail."

Griffen then tried to run from the police. He allegedly grabbed a policeman in the crotch before he was tasered to the ground. Griffen was taken in on suspected felony battery. He posted the $50,000 bail and was released the next day.

Griffen had been arrested in Hollywood two nights before for being drunk in public, but he was released the following day. He also was cited for a noise violation in Nantucket, MA in 2009.

Vikings spokesman Jeff Anderson said, "We are aware of yesterday's alleged incident involving Everson Griffen. At this time the team is gathering all the facts and will withhold any further comment."

TV Camera to Be Allowed into Michael Jackson Manslaughter Trial

A Los Angeles judge ruled on Monday, February 7, 2011, that a TV camera will be allowed inside the courtroom to record the involuntary manslaughter case of Michael Jackson's former physician, Dr. Conrad Murray.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor decided to allow the camera as long as it did not interfere with the proceedings, and requested it be placed in the "absolute least-intrusive [location]."

Murray, who was hired by Jackson in the summer of 2009, faces charges after providing Jackson with sedatives and surgical anesthetic propofol to treat his insomnia. In June 2009, Jackson died of what a coroner found to be propofol poisoning.

Murray has pleaded not guilty to the involuntary manslaughter charges, and plans to argue that Jackson was in poor health at the time of his death and ultimately administered the final, fatal dose of propofol to himself. If convicted, Murray faces up to four years in prison.

Hockey Player Being Investigated in Alleged Los Angeles Assault

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Mike Komisarek is being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department for an incident that happened inside a Hollywood night club earlier this month.

Komisarek reportedly was involved in an altercation on January 8, 2011, during which he was slapped in the face by a woman after he picked her up and wouldn't put her down. Komisarek reportedly punched her in the face as retaliation.

Los Angeles Police detective Rolando Rodriguez said, "At this point in time, all I can tell you is that it's an ongoing investigation. The investigation is still open."

"At a time the investigator reveals (any) criminal activity had occurred, or charges have been filed, the department will put out a press release," Rodriguez said. "As of right now, I can't release any information on an open investigation."

For his part, Komisarek is following the advice of his general manager Brian Burke. "I've been advised by Burkie not to comment on the situation," Komisarek said. "That's what it is right now, you know? I don't have anything to say. I don't have a comment to make on that situation right now."

Los Angeles reality-TV show star Nicole Richie recently completed her probation for a California DUI arrest that occurred a few years ago.

Richie was originally pulled over in 2006 for drunk driving in California when she was caught driving the wrong way on a Los Angeles freeway. She was put on probation that same year.

This week, Richie was released from probation after a judge found she had completed all terms. Richie was originally planning to be on probation until February of this year.

Richie's California DUI lawyer presented evidence in court to show that the star had completed all the terms of the probation, including attending an 18-month alcohol education course.

Earlier this month, Richie was married to Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden. The couple has two kids together.

Vince Neil to Serve Time after California DUI Arrest

Vince Neil, the well-known Motley Crue frontman, will serve time in jail after a Los Angeles DUI arrest.

Neil was arrested last June for driving his black Lamborghini while under the influence of alcohol. He has since been sentenced to two weeks in prison on DUI charges.

This will be Neil's second jail sentence for drunk driving. He previously served 20 days in 1984 after a drunk driving accident that killed Hanoi Rocks drummer Nicholas Dingley. Neil also paid $2.4 million restitution for the crash.

According to the district attorney's office, Neil will start serving his DUI sentence on February 15, 2011. He is currently a contestant on the reality TV show Skating with the Stars.

Ex-Dodger Outfielder Arrested for Terrorist Threats

Milton Bradley, a former Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder and current Seattle Mariners player, was arrested on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, for suspected terrorist threats.

Bradley, a graduate of Long Beach Polytechnic High School and an off-season resident of Los Angeles, was arrested after a woman called the Los Angeles Police Department's West Valley Station to report him.

Bradley was arrested in his home in the 5300 block of Oak Park Avenue, and was released from custody seven hours later after posting $50,000 bail.

Jack Zduriencik, the Mariners executive vice president and general manager of baseball operations, said, "While we do not yet have full details on what occurred, we are aware of the situation and take it very seriously."

Zduriencik also said, "We are in the process of determining the full circumstances of what occurred today. Until we have more information, we will not be able to comment further."

Bradley, a former member of the Indians and Cubs, is infamous for his on- and off-the-field antics that have vilified him in the eyes of fans and landed him in anger management courses.

Jaime Pressly Arrested for California DUI

Jaime Pressly, an actress who starred in the sitcom "My Name Is Earl," was arrested last week in Santa Monica for DUI.

Pressly was reportedly arrested in Santa Monica, CA after she failed a field sobriety test. It is not known if she took a breathalyzer.

Pressly was pulled over and arrested around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, January 5, 2011, and held on $15,000 bail.

Pressly is married to entertainment lawyer Simran Singh, and has a son from a previous relationship. She has been out of the spotlight since the cancellation of "Earl" last year, something this arrest will change.

It is not yet known when Pressly will appear in court or how the legal process surrounding the arrest will play out.

NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor Convicted of Soliciting Sex from 16-Year-Old Prostitute

Big news in the sports world today regarding former NFL star Lawrence Taylor. The NFL Hall of Famer and contestant on Dancing with the Stars, pled guilty to sexual misconduct and soliciting a 16-year-old prostitute. Although he will not have to serve jail time, he will have to register as a sex offender. He will also be on probation for six years. Now, in statutory rape cases, that is, where the defendant stands accused of having sexual intercourse with a minor, the minor is deemed legally incapable of giving consent to sexual intercourse. So even if the girl was a prostitute and agreed to provide sexual services, the law deems her permission null and void, so to speak.

The case was heard in New York.

In California, Mr. Taylor would have been able to use the defense of reasonable mistaken belief that the girl was over the age of majority. That is a permissible defense in this state. Mr. Taylor indicated that the girl told him she was 19. In a California statutory rape case, a Los Angeles criminal defense lawyer or California criminal defense lawyer would look at what the complaining witness told the defendant about her age, her appearance, whether she held herself out to be 18 to the community, (for example posting a false age on social networking sites), the criminal defense lawyer would that argue these things, at least in combination, gave the defendant a mistaken but still, reasonable belief that she was an adult. This would negate the element of intent and result in the acquittal of the defendant (if a jury buys the defendant's argument, of course) or pretrial dismissal if the defense lawyer can convince the prosecutor to drop charges.

Also, in California, a statutory rape conviction does not result in a sex offender registration. Now other sex offenses, such as lewd conduct with a child under 288 of the penal code, do fall under Meghan's Law but not Penal Code 261.5, or statutory rape. Again, that's California.

Sentencing for Mr. Taylor is set for March 22nd, 2011, when the judge will determine the sex-offender level.

Identity Theft Suspect Arrested in Los Angeles

An Oregon woman wanted for stealing more than one million dollars from bank customers was arrested last week in Los Angeles. She will be taken back to Oregon to stand trial.

Shawna Leimomi Moore-Saia, a 37-year-old former Wells Fargo banker, surrendered to the FBI in Los Angeles on Monday, December 27, 2010. She faces charges of aggravated identity theft, credit card fraud, wire fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering.

Moore-Saia reportedly stole $1.2 million from Coos County seniors over a four-year period from August 2006 to August 2010, when she rose from teller to assistant manager at a Wells Fargo branch.

Moore-Saia was fired when she was found to have been opening new accounts for customers without their permission in order to earn commissions. That incident opened an investigation, which peaked with a search warrant for her home that uncovered the depths of her crimes.

Dr. Conrad Murray Defense Possibly Arguing that Michael Jackson

An attorney for Dr. Murray, the doctor facing an involuntary manslaughter charge in Michael Jackon's death, indicated at a hearing on Wednesday, December 29th, 2010, that the defense will focus on a second syringe found at Jackson's bedside. Murray's lawyer told the judge that the syringe may have been used by someone other than the doctor to inject propofol, the powerful anesthetic that caused Jackson's death in June of 2009. "Who injected the propofol? That's the issue in this case," Murray's lawyer told Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor.

For Dr. Murray to be convicted of Involuntary Manslaughter, the crime with which he has been charged, the prosecutor must show not only that Dr. Murray committed a criminal act that posed a risk to Jackson's life, but that the act caused Jackson's death. If his lawyer can prove to a jury that Murray did not actually inject or administer the drug, but rather only prescribed it, and the injection was responsible for Jackson's death (obviously, not mere prescription), he may prevail at trial. Only time will tell.

Sacramento Kings Assistant Arrested for California DUI

The California-based Sacramento Kings NBA franchise has been slapped with its third DUI arrest of the season, this time affecting 47-year-old Assistant Coach Mario Elie.

Elie was pulled over and arrested for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) early Thursday, December 9, 2010, in Sacramento. He was booked in the Sacramento County Main Jail just after 2 a.m. and released after posting bail.

The head coach of the Kings, Paul Westphal, was quick to address the arrest, saying that he and Elie had both talked to the players. "We're here to play basketball against Miami," the coach said. "It's something you can't dwell on. Everybody knows better."

The league is not likely to take action in suspending or fining Elie before the legal case runs its course. However, there is the chance that Elie gets punished from within the organization.

Earlier this year, player Antoine Wright was arrested for suspected DUI. Co-owner George Maloof, Jr. was arrested for the same charges in Las Vegas just two months ago.

Los Angeles Murderers Make First Court Appearance

A York couple, accused of murdering and dismembering a body in a Los Angeles hotel, made their first court appearance on Monday, December 13, 2010.

Edward Garcia Jr., 36, and his wife, Melissa Hope Garcia, 25, have been charged with one count of murder each for the killing of 49-year-old Herbert White.

The couple allegedly killed White and then dismembered him. Hotel staff found parts of White's body, which had been cut into five pieces, in a backpack and under the room's bed sheets.

The Garcia's were arrested on Friday, December 10^th, when they were found in an abandoned building in the Hollywood area. They were surrounded by trash and human waste.

The couple did not enter a plea while in court, and the arraignment was postponed until January 5, 2011. Prosecutors have not decided whether to pursue the death penalty against the two.

Narcotics Officer Charged in Case of California Embezzlement

A special agent with California's Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement has been accused of stealing more than $30,000 in an internal investigation last week.

The agent, 35-year-old Gabriel Noel Baltodano, reportedly was stealing money from narcotic suspects in the course of the bureau's investigations. He was arrested last Thursday.

Baltodano has pleaded not guilty on two counts of grand theft and two counts of embezzlement by a public officer. Baltodano now also faces a count of filing a false police report.

If convicted on all charges, Baltodano faces more than four years in state prison. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Terry A. Bork ordered Baltodano to remain jailed before a bail review hearing this week.

Man Accused of Embezzling Money from Deployed Soldier

A California man, who was put in charge of a soldier's finances when he was deployed overseas, has been accused of embezzling funds from the soldier's accounts.

The soldier, also from California, started a two-year deployment in 2006 and asked his neighbor and self-employed bookkeeper, Kenneth McCall, to care for his personal finances. The soldier's wife, who died just before the deployment, had looked after the accounts previously.

However, authorities now say that McCall used the power of attorney to funnel money out of the soldier's accounts, making personal purchases at electronics and other stores in the area.

The amount is reportedly around $30,000 dollars. McCall has been charged with one felony count of embezzlement, and his trial is scheduled for next month.

Teenager Sentenced in Costly California DUI Crash

A Vista teenager, who injured a toddler in an October drunk driving accident, was sentenced in court today.

The 17-year-old boy, whose identity is not being released, jumped the curb while driving on October 18, 2010, striking a young child, Izaiah Wallis, and his maternal grandmother.

Wallis sustained serious injuries in the crash, suffering from a separation of his skull from his spine. As a result, the toddler suffers from blindness, paralysis, and brain damage.

The 17-year-old was driving with a blood alcohol level of .20 percent, twice the legal limit for drivers 21 years and older. He was also high on marijuana at the time and driving without a license.

The teenager, speaking to the family of the injured child, expressed regret for his actions. "I know what I did was wrong," he said. "From the bottom of my heart, I am really sorry."

The teenager was sentenced to 480 days in a rehabilitative program. This represented an increase in punishment over what was originally suggested, and the maximum amount possible for the charges.

First Arrest Made in Insider-Trading Scheme

This week, the government made the first of what may be many arrests in an insider-trading scheme that stretches from coast-to-coast.

On Wednesday, Don Ching Trang Chu was arrested at his home in Somerset, N.J. He was charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit fraud, and released on a $1 million bond.

Chu, who worked for a research company based in Mountain View, CA, is suspected of helping hedge fund managers get inside information on publicly-traded corporations by connecting them with employees of these firms.
Some of the companies Chu is suspected of working with include Broadcom Corp., based in Irvine, and Atheros Communications Inc., which is based in San Jose.

The FBI raided the offices of three other hedge funds earlier this week. Chu's arrest could be just the first in a string of white collar crimes brought into the public spotlight.

Former Yankee Leyritz Acquitted of Manslaughter DUI

Jim Leyritz, a former player for baseball's New York Yankees, was acquitted of manslaughter charges in connection with a fatal DUI accident that occurred on December 28, 2007.

Leyritz, after celebrating his birthday at nighttime hot spots, collided with 30-year-old Fredia Ann Veitch, a mother of two. Veitch was killed in the crash.

The manslaughter trial centered around whether Leyritz ran a red light, a greater factor of negligence, or just a yellow light. The evidence was inconclusive, leading to the acquittal. Leyritz was still charged with a misdemeanor DUI, and faces a maximum six-month prison sentence.

Veitch's husband, disappointed but understanding of the verdict, said "I don't think 6 months for a complete life but at the same time intent is not there. The mistake he made caused what happened."

LA Man Sentenced to 15 Years to Life in DUI Death

A Los Angeles man was sentenced this week, almost two months after being convicted of felony murder in connection with a DUI crash that killed a woman.

Angel Herrera Leal, a 30-year-old resident of Los Angeles, was sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison in connection with a head-on accident that occurred in December 2008.

Leal's blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit when he was driving the wrong way on Interstate 5 in Anaheim, crashing into a Toyota Corolla. The driver of the car was seriously injured and a passenger riding in the Corolla was killed.

Leal also had two prior drunken driving convictions and was driving on a suspended license, which hurt his case for more lenient sentencing.

Prosecution Looking for 15-20 Years in Milwaukee Embezzlement Case

Former Koss Corp. executive, Sujata "Sue" Sachdeva, has admitted to embezzling $34 million from the stereo headphone manufacturer and will be sentenced on Thursday.

The prosecution says she deserves the full 15-20 years because the crime was sophisticated and put the company in jeopardy. The defense asserts that she should be afforded some leniency in the case because of good social standing, a compulsive shopping disorder, and a clean criminal record.

The prosecution has not been swayed, saying in a report: "For almost half of her adult life, Sachdeva has been engaged in criminal conduct. [...] It should be to Sachdeva's shame that, despite having an intact, supportive family, the benefits of a college education and an affluent lifestyle independent of her fraud, Sachdeva nonetheless elected to steal from her employer to purchase huge quantities of luxury clothing and other goods."

The embezzlement started sometime in 2004, and from July of that year through December 2009, Sachdeva took over $31 million from the company, accounting for 60% of its net income. In 2009, she tapped into a new line of credit for the company, taking another $5.8 million.

The embezzlement, the largest in this part of Wisconsin in the past 25 years, was also well-protected and amazingly complex.

Sacramento Kings Player Arrested for DUI, Apologizes

Antoine Wright, a forward for the NBA's Sacramento Kings, was arrested this week for driving under the influence (DUI).

Wright, who was driving in Placer County, was arrested early Friday morning, November 5, 2010, after failing field sobriety tests. His blood alcohol level at the time of the arrest has not yet been released.

Police pulled Wright over after another driver on Interstate 80 called to report a drunk driver, who had run over a couple of traffic cones and almost hit the witness's car.

Geoff Petrie, the President of Basketball Operations for the Kings, said, "We are extremely disappointed in the situation Antoine has created for himself and the organization."

Wright later released his own statement saying, "I'm sorry for having gotten myself into this situation. I sincerely apologize to my teammates and coaches, the Sacramento Kings Organization, the Sacramento community and my family."

Wright was released from jail on a $2,500 bail. His future court appearances have not yet been scheduled.
