I'm facing criminal charges. What should I look for in a lawyer?

A: Hiring a lawyer to represent you against a criminal charges can be one of the most important choices of your life. Why? Because the stakes are high; poor or incompetent representation may result in an undesirable resolution of your case, resulting in prison time or a conviction that will saddle you for the rest of your life. Competent, zealous and quality representation may spare you the misery that accompanies a criminal conviction.

In making your choice, it's important to consider many things:

"Promises, Promises."  Many attorneys will make promises and guarantees about your case.  Many of them will tell you things that sound overly optimistic.  It's important that you obtain an honest assessment of your case. You may be enticed to hire the attorney that provides you with a "cure-all" answer.

Fees: Although you are obviously going to consider your budget in hiring an attorney, consider the worth of your freedom, your reputation and the impact that a criminal conviction can have on your life.  Some attorneys will charge fees that may seem "too good to be true."  But consider that many attorneys who charge unusually low fees may not be as motivated to work as hard for you and that you may be sacrificing quality of representation.

Experience: Given the repercussions of a criminal conviction and the possible loss of your freedom, you will want a law firm that is highly experienced.  We have over 50 years of criminal defense experience (combined amount).  Our lawyers have seen virtually every type of criminal case and have fought vigorously for every one of their clients to obtain dismissals or reductions where dismissals are not possible.

Credentials: Robert Ernenwein is a Board Certified Criminal Law Specialist who is also a "Super Lawyer" (from 2004 to the present time), is a former Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney (i.e., prosecutor) who has represented tens of thousands of persons accused of crimes since 1987. Bruce McGregor is also a former Los Angeles prosecutor and he is AV-Rated by Martindale-Hubbell as an excellent criminal defense lawyer who has also represented tens of thousands of criminal defendants since 1987. Lorgio Coimbra is an experienced, spanish-speaking criminal defense lawyer who was also an Immigration Lawyer.  He clerked for a highly-competent immigration law firm for nearly 10 years and now uses his broad experience and knowledge of immigration law to protect his clients from the immigration consequences of a criminal case.

The combination of these credentials is a powerful thing to have on your side in the face of criminal charges. There are many lawyers and law firms that do not have nearly this kind of experience and reputation.

Be careful who you hire. It may determine the outcome of your case.
