DISMISSAL OF PETTY THEFT CHARGES; CLIENT ATTENDED DIVERSION PROGRAM BUT RECEIVED NO CONVICTION

Our client, a college student, was charged with Petty Theft (in violation of California Penal Code Section 484(a)).  Our Torrance lawyers made fourteen (14) court appearances on behalf of our client.  The prosecutor's office had a policy not to reduce any petty thefts.  Our office would not take "no" for an answer.

We petitioned the prosecutor's office.  We provided them with school transcripts and letters of recommendation.  We explained over and over how damaging a theft-related conviction would be toward our client.  Ultimately, and on the eve of trial, the prosecutor agreed to a deferred entry of judgement (DEJ) program whereby the client will ultimately have her case dismissed.  The client is required to pay certain fees and costs and do community service, but is thrilled to know that she will not have a permanent theft conviction on her record.
