In April 2010, out of the Los Angeles Superior Courthouse, Airport Division, Attorney Lorgio Coimbra was able to secure the dismissal of a case where our client was charged with two criminal counts: Count 1: False Evidence of Registration (in violation of Vehicle Code Section 4462.5) and Count 2: Unlicensed Driver (in violation of Vehicle Code Section 12500(a)). Mr. Coimbra's immigration law background informed him that a conviction of False Evidence of Vehicle Registration would likely subject the defendant (a non-permanent resident) to deportability or, at minimum, inadmissibility. The reason for this is because the charged offense contains the element of fraud. After several pretrial hearings, he was able to convince the prosecutor to dismiss both counts. The defendant pled to an "infraction," a non-criminal offense and Counts 1 and 2 were dismissed. The defendant was spared potential jailtime and all-but certain adverse consequences to his immigration status.
Awarded: Dismissal of misdemeanor case, reduction to infraction
